SPF 15 vs SPF 30 vs SPF 50: Which Sunscreen Should You Use?

SPF 15 vs SPF 30 vs SPF 50: Which Sunscreen Should You Use?

SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 about 97% and SPF 50 about 98%. For most people in India, SPF 30 is a good everyday choice. Choose SPF 50 for long hours in direct sun, outdoor work, sports or the beach, and SPF 15 only for short, light exposure. Whichever you pick, apply enough and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. All three Raaga Professional sunscreens offer PA++++ protection and are non-greasy, water and sweat proof.

What Does SPF Actually Mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the rays mainly responsible for sunburn and tanning. The higher the number, the more UVB it filters out.

SPF only tells you about UVB. Protection from UVA rays, which contribute to tanning, dark spots and early skin aging, is shown by the PA rating. PA++++ is the highest PA rating. For a full breakdown, read Ultimate Sunscreen Guide: SPF and PA Ratings Explained.

SPF 15 vs SPF 30 vs SPF 50: The Difference

SPF 15 SPF 30 SPF 50
UVB blocked About 93% About 97% About 98%
Best for Short, light sun exposure Everyday use, commuting Long hours outdoors, sports, beach
Raaga option SPF 15 Lotion, PA++++ SPF 30 Lotion, PA++++ SPF 50 Lotion, PA++++

Notice that the jump from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is only about 1% more UVB protection. That does not make SPF 50 pointless: for long hours in strong sun, that extra margin matters. But it does mean that how much sunscreen you apply, and how often you reapply, matters just as much as the number on the bottle.

Which SPF Should You Choose?

Choose SPF 15 if:

  • You spend most of the day indoors
  • Your sun exposure is short, such as a quick walk or a few minutes outside
  • You want a light, everyday layer of protection

Choose SPF 30 if:

  • You commute daily by bike, auto, bus or on foot
  • You step out several times a day
  • You want reliable everyday protection against sun damage and tanning

Choose SPF 50 if:

  • You work outdoors or spend several hours in direct sun
  • You play sports, swim, or are heading to the beach
  • You tan easily, or you are using a de-tan treatment and want to protect your results

Living in a city with strong sun, like Chennai, Hyderabad or Mumbai? SPF 30 is a good daily minimum, with SPF 50 for long days outside. For help choosing by skin type, see How to Choose the Right SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion for Your Skin Type.

Does a Higher SPF Mean You Can Stay Out Longer?

Not really. A higher SPF filters more UVB, but every sunscreen wears off through sweat, water, rubbing and time. Even SPF 50 needs to be reapplied every 2 to 3 hours, and after sweating or swimming. A thin layer of SPF 50 applied once in the morning can protect you less than a generous layer of SPF 30 reapplied through the day.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

  1. Apply generously: Most people use far too little. Cover your face, neck, ears and any exposed skin evenly.
  2. Apply before stepping out: Put it on as the last step of your morning skincare, before you leave.
  3. Do not forget easy-to-miss spots: The back of the neck, ears, hands and feet tan easily.
  4. Reapply every 2 to 3 hours: And always after sweating, swimming or towelling off.
  5. Use it every day: UV rays pass through clouds, so wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.

What All Three Raaga Sunscreens Have in Common

  • PA++++: The highest UVA protection rating, alongside UVB protection.
  • Anti-tan protection: Helps prevent tanning from sun exposure.
  • Non-greasy: A lightweight lotion that does not leave a sticky feel.
  • Water and sweat proof: Stays on through commutes, workouts and humid weather.
  • 55 ml pack: Compact enough to carry for reapplication.

The only real difference is the level of UVB protection, so the choice comes down to how much time you spend in the sun. See all Raaga sunscreens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is SPF 30 enough for Indian weather?
For everyday use, yes, as long as you apply enough and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. For long hours in direct sun, choose SPF 50.

Q: Is SPF 15 enough?
SPF 15 suits short, light sun exposure, such as days spent mostly indoors. For daily commuting or longer time outside, SPF 30 or SPF 50 gives better protection.

Q: Is SPF 50 better than SPF 30?
SPF 50 blocks slightly more UVB, about 98% compared to about 97%. It is the better choice for long hours outdoors, while SPF 30 is enough for most everyday use.

Q: What does PA++++ mean?
PA measures protection from UVA rays. PA++++ is the highest rating. All three Raaga sunscreens are PA++++.

Q: How often should I reapply sunscreen?
Every 2 to 3 hours, and after sweating, swimming or towelling off.

Q: Should I wear sunscreen after a de-tan treatment?
Yes. Skin is more sensitive to sun after a de-tan session. SPF 50 is a good choice for the days that follow. Read How to Use Raaga Detan Cream for the full routine.
